Breast Lumpectomy

Anesthesia Implications

Position: Supine, arms extended, Bed turned 30 degrees
Time: 30-60 min (short)
Blood Loss: Very Low (5-10 ml)
Post-op Pain: Minimal (1-3)
Maintenance Paralytic: No

Anesthetic Approaches

  • GLMA
  • MAC, Propofol Drip
The Anesthesia

Secure the airway – especially if opting to do a MAC case, make sure the airway is good early in the case. The surgeon will be working towards the top of the bed, which will make it difficult to troubleshoot airway problems.

PONV – prophylactacly give antiemetics/fluids for PONV. These patients tend to be especially prone to PONV.

Contraindicated arm – Many of these patients are repeat patients for prior lumpectomies or mastectomies. Ensure the patient doesn’t have contraindications to BP cuffs or IV’s bilaterally.

The Pathophysiology

A breast lump has been discovered with possibilities of cancer.

The Surgery

The surgery is the process of removing a breast lump.
