Anesthesia Management in Parkinson’s Disease
This course reviews how Parkinson’s disease alters perioperative risk and outlines practical anesthetic strategies to keep these patients safe. It covers system-specific concerns (respiratory, autonomic, cardiovascular, and GI), preoperative evaluation and timing of dopaminergic medications, how to choose between regional and general anesthesia, and key drug–drug interactions (including levodopa, MAOIs, opioids, induction agents, and neuromuscular blockers). You’ll also learn how induction choices like propofol, ketamine, and volatile agents affect Parkinsonian symptoms, how to manage intraoperative exacerbations, and how to optimize postoperative respiratory care, pain control, and rapid resumption of PD medications.
